Former Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama remains one of Africa’s greatest World Cup goalkeepers even as Curaçao veteran Eloy Room rewrites the record books at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Afrik-Foot reports.

Room produced a stunning display in Curaçao’s goalless draw against Ecuador, making 15 saves to secure his country’s first-ever World Cup point. The 37‑year‑old Miami FC goalkeeper finished the match with the highest number of saves ever recorded in a 90‑minute World Cup game, surpassing the previous regulation‑time mark of 13 set by Peru’s Ramón Quiroga against the Netherlands in 1978.

Enyeama’s unforgettable World Cup legacy

Enyeama’s most famous World Cup performance came during Nigeria’s opening Group B match against Argentina at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Although the Super Eagles lost 1‑0 after Gabriel Heinze’s early header, Enyeama delivered a remarkable six‑save display that kept Diego Maradona’s side at bay for most of the contest.

Four of those saves came against Lionel Messi, who arrived at the tournament as the reigning World Player of the Year. Enyeama denied the Argentine superstar with a series of spectacular stops, including a fingertip save from a curling effort and a close‑range block late in the game.

His heroics earned him the Man of the Match award, making him the first African goalkeeper to receive the honour at a World Cup despite ending up on the losing side. Maradona later praised the Nigerian, admitting he was the main reason Messi failed to score.

Enyeama maintained that level in Brazil four years later. At the 2014 World Cup, he registered 21 saves in four matches as Nigeria reached the Round of 16. He kept clean sheets against Iran and Bosnia‑Herzegovina and played a crucial role in helping the Super Eagles qualify from the group stage.

Only Ghana’s Richard Kingson, who made 22 saves during the 2010 World Cup, has recorded more saves in a single tournament among African goalkeepers than Enyeama’s 21.

Kingson is also Africa’s single‑match record holder with nine saves against the Czech Republic in 2006, while Morocco’s Yassine Bounou, Cameroon legend Thomas N’Kono and Senegal’s Tony Sylva also rank among the continent’s top tournament performers.

Eloy Room joins elite World Cup company

Room’s record‑breaking performance against Ecuador came just days after Curaçao suffered a heavy 7‑1 defeat to Germany in their tournament opener.

The experienced goalkeeper faced relentless pressure throughout the match but repeatedly denied Ecuador’s attackers, finishing with 15 saves and a clean sheet in a historic 0‑0 draw.

The achievement places Room among an elite group of World Cup goalkeepers. The overall single‑match record remains Tim Howard’s 16 saves for the United States against Belgium in the Round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup, although that performance came across 120 minutes including extra time.

Room’s 15 saves are now recognised as the highest total ever recorded in a standard 90‑minute World Cup match.

Curaçao could reach the World Cup Round of 32 with a win over Côte d’Ivoire in their last group match on Thursday.
