Sharapova Declines to Return to Professional Tennis

Veteran tennis star Maria Sharapova has made it clear that she will not return to the professional circuit, confirming that her retirement is permanent.

While their on‑court rivalry was highly regarded, Sharapova has redirected her focus to family, wellness, and business ventures rather than the demands of competitive tennis.

“It’s extraordinary, I think, when you have done something for such a long time, it’s ingrained in you,” Sharapova told Sportskeeda.

“It’s a huge part of your identity, especially as a woman. I think compared to other careers, you always know there is perhaps the end will come sooner than in other professions.”

“Whether it’s because your body breaks down, whether you lose interest or you wanna start a family. Serena’s in an incredible position and wants to showcase her amazing and wants gift and talent to her two daughters. I am excited to watch her,” Sharapova added.

Despite their historic rivalry, the two players have moved beyond past tensions and now share deep mutual respect. Sharapova even had Serena introduce her at her induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
