Ruben Amorim to take reins at AC Milan, set to sign two-year deal

Ruben Amorim is on the brink of returning to the sidelines after reportedly agreeing to become the next manager of AC Milan.

The 41‑year‑old Portuguese coach, who has been unattached since leaving Manchester United in January, is expected to sign an initial two‑year contract at San Siro, taking over from Massimiliano Allegri.

According to the Portuguese outlet A Bola, Amorim has agreed to a deal that runs until 2028, with an option for an additional season.

Although the manager had originally planned a sabbatical after his tenure at Old Trafford, the chance to lead the seven‑time European champions persuaded him to change his mind.

The financial terms of the agreement include a base salary of €3.5 million net per season and performance bonuses tied to winning trophies and securing Champions League qualification—a competition Milan has missed for the past two seasons.

AC Milan briefly considered 38‑year‑old Al‑Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle. However, Amorim’s free‑agent status meant the club could avoid paying a hefty release clause, making him the preferred choice.

Negotiations are almost complete, but the deal awaits final approval from Gerry Cardinale, head of RedBird Capital and owner of AC Milan. Once approved, Amorim is expected to travel to Milan immediately to sign the contract and begin preparing for the upcoming campaign.

Amorim’s quick return to management is a financial relief for Manchester United. After his dismissal earlier this year, the Premier League club faced a £16.7 million payout to cover the remainder of his contract and the salaries of his extensive backroom staff.

By accepting the Milan job promptly, Amorim will forgo a substantial portion of his ongoing compensation from United, providing a much‑needed financial boost to the club, which has already seen a positive turnaround on the pitch under Michael Carrick’s leadership.
