Following the recent mob attack and killing of a woman accused of stealing young children, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kaduna State Chapter, on Thursday condemned the incident that occurred in Mararaban Jos, Kaduna State.

The women’s group described the act as barbaric, inhuman and a clear violation of the rule of law.

In a statement released on Thursday, the association also praised the Kaduna State Police Command for reacting swiftly by arresting and arraigning 24 suspects linked to the incident. It said the prompt action demonstrated professionalism and a commitment to justice.

The statement, jointly signed by its Chairperson, Sahura Jibril Maidoki, and Secretary, Hadiza Abdullahi Bello, expressed shock and sadness over the gruesome killing, stressing that no circumstance could justify jungle justice.

It urged citizens to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected criminal activities to the appropriate law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.

The statement further warned that mob action undermines the justice system and contradicts the values of a civilised society, noting that such acts threaten public safety and social order.

NAWOJ also called on the judiciary to ensure the diligent and speedy prosecution of all those involved in the killing so that justice would be served for the deceased and her family.

The association further urged the government and other relevant stakeholders to continue educating the public on the dangers of mob violence and the importance of due process in the administration of justice.
