Cape Verde produced the most surprising result of the 2026 World Cup to date by holding European champions Spain to a 0‑0 draw in their Group H opener in Atlanta, according to the Irish News.
Spain has now failed to beat an African side in their last three World Cup matches, recording only two draws and a loss.
Before facing Cape Verde, the Spaniards lost on penalties to Morocco in the round of 16 at Qatar 2022 and were held to a 2‑2 draw by the Atlas Lions in the group stage of 2018 in Russia.
The last time Spain defeated an African nation at the World Cup was in 2006, when they beat Tunisia 3‑1 in the group stage.
In their opening group match against Nigeria’s Super Eagles at France 1998, Spain lost 3‑2.
In Monday’s group opener, Spain dominated possession in the first half but could not break through a resolute Cape Verde defence. Ferran Torres hit the crossbar from close range, and veteran goalkeeper Vozinha made a fine reaction save to deny him. Vozinha also tipped away Aymeric Laporte’s glancing header from a corner, leaving the match level at half‑time.
Lamine Yamal, who had been sidelined since April with a hamstring injury and missed the final weeks of Barcelona’s La Liga‑winning campaign, was eventually substituted on with 20 minutes left. Spain still could not find a way past Vozinha, and the Blue Sharks secured a notable result.
