Egypt opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a solid performance, holding Belgium to a 1‑1 draw in their Group G opener, according to Morocco World News.

The result means Egypt remain without a World Cup victory since their debut in 1934.

The Pharaohs took the lead in the 19th minute at Seattle Stadium when Emam Ashour scored after a pass from Mohamed Salah, who was playing on his 34th birthday.

Despite Belgium dominating possession in the first half, they struggled to create clear chances against Egypt’s compact defense.

In the 33rd minute, Courtois made a save when Mostafa Abdel Raouf “Zico” shot from a tight angle.

Belgium increased pressure in the second half as Kevin De Bruyne became more involved.

De Bruyne nearly equalised in the 53rd minute when a free‑kick hit the post.

Egypt also had chances to extend their lead. Salah’s header was saved, Ashour missed the rebound, and Marmoush created problems with his pace on several counter‑attacks.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia introduced Romelu Lukaku in the 66th minute, hoping the striker could change the game.

Shortly after coming on, Lukaku applied pressure as Thomas Meunier delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area. The ball was diverted into the net by Mohamed Hany, resulting in an own goal.

Egypt earned an important point as Belgium continued to push for a win, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir and the defense held firm in the closing stages.

Both teams now have one point, leaving Group G open ahead of the Iran‑New Zealand match.

The Pharaohs will next face New Zealand in Vancouver on June 21 before meeting Iran in Seattle on June 26.

Belgium will play Iran in their second group match before ending the group stage against New Zealand.
