Height often dominates discussions in modern football, but Panama playmaker César Yanis shows that size is not everything.
Standing at just 1.60 metres (5ft 3in), Yanis is the shortest player set to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making him one of the tournament’s most intriguing figures.
The diminutive midfielder is closely followed by Jeremy Antonisse of Curaçao, who measures 1.64 metres (5ft 5in).
Yan is expected to use his low centre of gravity and agility to trouble defenders, but he could find himself sharing the pitch with one of the tournament’s tallest players when Panama face England in their final Group L match.
England defender Dan Burn stands at an imposing 2.01 metres (6ft 7in), creating a staggering 41‑centimetre height difference between the two players.
The potential matchup would not only provide a striking visual contrast but could also set a new benchmark for height disparities involving players at the same World Cup.
The current record for the biggest height gap between opposing outfield players on the pitch in a World Cup match dates back to the 2006 tournament in Germany.
During that competition, towering Serbia and Montenegro striker Nikola Žigić, who stood 2.02 metres tall, shared the field with Côte d’Ivoire defender Bakary Koné, who measured 1.63 metres.
The difference of 39 centimetres between Žigić and Koné has stood as a unique World Cup record for two decades.
Should Yanis and Burn take the field together when Panama meet England, the 41‑centimetre gap between them would surpass that mark and add another fascinating statistical footnote to World Cup history.
Despite being the tournament’s shortest player, Yanis will arrive at the World Cup with the same ambition as every other participant: helping his country make an impact on football’s biggest stage. For Panama, the playmaker’s creativity could prove far more important than the number on a height chart.
