On Saturday, a 40‑foot trailer lost control on the Nkpor fly‑over bridge, fell onto the roadway below, and crushed four vehicles. Five people were injured in the incident.
Eyewitnesses reported that the trailer was ascending the fly‑over when the driver lost control, veered off the road, and crashed onto four vehicles beneath the bridge. The vehicles included two shuttle buses, an Audi car, and a passing trailer.
At the time of the accident, five individuals—passersby, a driver, and passengers—sustained injuries of varying severity.
One of the shuttle bus drivers, Amaechi Eze from Ukehe in Igbo‑Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, escaped death by entering a side drainage to rescue a small fowl that had fallen into it. The trailer crashed from above, smashing his bus and the other vehicles. Eze expressed gratitude to God for his survival and appealed for assistance, as his vehicle was beyond repair.
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials confirmed the incident. Sector Public Education Officer Margaret Onabe identified the damaged vehicles as a Mercedes‑Benz articulated truck (FTD581XA), a commercial shuttle bus (ENU540ZJ), another shuttle bus (BKL661XA), and an Audi Volkswagen car (ENU528MK).
Onabe said the FRSC received a distress call at about 1310 hrs. A rescue team from RS5.31A Upper Iweka Outpost arrived at the scene by 1315 hrs. Six male adults were involved in the crash; two sustained minor injuries, while four were unharmed. No fatalities were reported.
Preliminary investigation pointed to brake failure and the trailer veering off the bridge as probable causes. Eyewitnesses also noted brake failure before the fall.
“Before the FRSC rescue team arrived, the injured were already taken to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention,” Onabe stated. “To maintain traffic flow and prevent secondary accidents, the FRSC heavy‑duty tow truck unit was called to clear the wreckage.”
Sector Commander Bridget Asekhauno wished a swift recovery for the injured and urged operators of articulated vehicles and commercial transport services to perform routine maintenance and ensure brakes are fully functional before departure.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to road safety and prompt emergency response across the state. Normal traffic flow is being restored on the affected road.
