Enugu Local Government Elections: NDC Candidates Are Best Prepared for Leadership, Says State Chairman Anih

The Enugu State branch of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), headed by Dr. Johnpaul Anih, announced that the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) has successfully screened all its candidates in preparation for the local government elections on September 26.

During a Monday interview with reporters in Enugu, Dr. Anih revealed that the party has nominated more than 14 candidates for chairmanship positions and over 210 candidates for councillorship roles throughout the state.

He added that the party’s campaign strategies are already underway, viewing the upcoming local elections as a key indicator of Enugu’s political climate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Anih praised ENSIEC for its dedication to fairness, transparency, and inclusiveness during the screening, and cautioned that any efforts to undermine the electoral process would be opposed through lawful, democratic channels.

“We are encouraged by the professionalism and transparency demonstrated by ENSIEC throughout the screening process. The commission has so far provided a level playing field for all participating political parties, and we urge it to sustain this approach until the conclusion of the elections.”

“However, we wish to make it clear that any attempt by individuals or groups to manipulate the process will be strongly resisted through lawful means. The credibility of the September 26 election will serve as a major indicator of the state’s preparedness for the 2027 general elections,” he said.

The NDC chairman also highlighted that the party held one of the state’s most credible and transparent primary elections, overseen by ENSIEC and security agencies, producing candidates capable of delivering effective grassroots leadership.

“Our candidates emerged through a transparent and credible process that reflected the wishes of party members. We are confident that they possess the competence, integrity, and grassroots support needed to provide quality leadership across the local government areas.”
