Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has made it clear that simply qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is not the end goal; the team is focused on making a substantial impact at the tournament.

Hassan, who played for Egypt in the 1990 World Cup and now leads the national side, believes the Pharaohs are ready to unlock their full potential and establish themselves among football’s elite.

Egypt’s Ultimate Ambition

“Reaching the World Cup as a player and as a coach is a great achievement,” Hassan said ahead of Egypt’s opening match against Belgium.

“Egypt must claim its rightful place in football. Back in 1990, we performed well but did not follow through. We came close to advancing, but it wasn’t meant to be. I hope, God willing, we can finally progress.”

Setting a New Standard at the World Cup

The Pharaohs are Africa’s most decorated football nation, holding a record seven Africa Cup of Nations titles.

Despite this success, Egypt has yet to reach the knockout stages of a World Cup. The team’s rich football heritage has inspired generations across the continent.

Hassan understands the unique significance of the World Cup for Egyptians, where success on football’s biggest stage is a shared national ambition.

“Football in Egypt is not just a game; it’s life. Whenever Egyptians see the flag, they rally behind it, especially in football. What matters to me is living up to the expectations of our people and fans,” Hassan said.

Hassan Relies on Salah

Hassan singled out captain Mohamed Salah, praising his achievements and his role in Egypt’s aspirations.

“Mohamed Salah has broken countless records worldwide,” the coach noted. “He is one of the best players in the world, and I hope he scores more goals than I do. The most important thing is that we win and score for Egypt.”
