The Nigeria Super Eagles clinched the 2026 Unity Cup on Saturday after decisive wins over Zimbabwe and Jamaica, according to Afrik‑Foot.
In the opening match, Nigeria defeated the Zimbabwean Warriors 2‑0, then shut out Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz 3‑0 in the final.
Coach Eric Chelle fielded an experimental squad that included 13 new players. Similar to their 2025 AFCON campaign, the team improved as the tournament progressed, ending with a markedly sharper performance than at the start.

1. NPFL Players Earn Well‑Deserved Acclaim
Of the 27 players called up for the 2026 Unity Cup, 13 came from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Two of these players—Chibueze Oputa and Kenneth Igboke—featured prominently, while four others earned their senior international debuts.

It was also encouraging to see Chibuike Nwaiwu shine and establish himself as a leader at the back. Nwaiwu is an NPFL success story, having spent three years with Heartland and Enyimba before moving to Europe.
2. Femi Azeez Shines as a New Option

In the opener against Zimbabwe, he scored both goals to secure the win, and in the final against Jamaica, he provided the assist for Terem Moffi’s goal.
Although Coach Chelle offered criticism of Azeez after the Zimbabwe match, the forward accepted the feedback and delivered a stronger performance against Jamaica. These displays suggest that Azeez has earned a place in future Super Eagles squads.
3. Eric Chelle Driving a Tactical Identity

The Franco‑Malian manager prefers a high press, forcing turnovers and disrupting opponents’ flow. This identity was on full display during both the AFCON and the Unity Cup, despite the short time he had with the team in London.
Nigerian fans have long awaited a clear sense of how the team would set up and approach opponents. They will hope that Chelle remains at the helm to continue building the team.
