Suspected gunmen injure man and leave behind ammunition during Delta community assault

Tension rose in the Edjekota‑Ogor Community of Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, after gunmen on Monday attacked and wounded an unidentified young man who was on his way home following a purchase of food for his infant.

The assailants caused bodily injuries to the victim, who is now hospitalized at an undisclosed facility, DAILY POST reports.

In the wake of the attack, community members have voiced concerns about increasing insecurity in the area.

During a conversation with reporters, Pastor Oghenemakpo Uyo, President‑General of the Edjekota‑Ogor Community, described the incident.

Uyo said the attackers emerged from a bush path on the Oviri‑Ogor/Edjekota‑Ogor Road and tried to compel the victim to follow them to an undisclosed location.

According to Uyo, the victim resisted, leading the gunmen to strike him with machetes and then allegedly shoot him.

Uyo added that community vigilantes later rescued the victim and transported him to a medical facility for treatment.

Uyo recounted, “I heard a gunshot and immediately alerted the community security outfit. As they approached the area, the attackers fled into the bush.”

He noted that items left at the scene reportedly included a machete, a bag of ammunition, food items, cigarettes, and other personal belongings.

The wounded victim, whose identity was withheld, described his ordeal, stating he had gone to buy food for his three‑month‑old baby when he was confronted by three armed men.

“They ordered me to follow them, but I refused. They attacked me with a cutlass and shot me several times before fleeing when community vigilantes arrived,” he said.
