The Sokoto State Police Command has announced a statewide initiative to target vehicles that lack registration number plates or have plates that are concealed, altered, defaced, or obscured. The move is part of a broader effort to strengthen security and enforce traffic regulations.
The enforcement drive follows a directive from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu. It aims to improve public safety, support intelligence‑led policing, and prevent the use of unidentifiable vehicles in criminal activities.
In a statement released on Friday, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ahmad Rufa’i said the operation would cover the entire state to ensure compliance with existing vehicle registration and traffic laws.
Commissioner of Police Hayatu Hassan Shaffa reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property. He emphasized that the exercise is intended to enhance security rather than inconvenience law‑abiding residents.
Shaffa urged vehicle owners and operators to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and equipped with approved number plates. He warned that owners of vehicles displaying covered, altered, defaced, or obscured plates must regularise their documentation or face prosecution and other legal sanctions.
The commissioner assured residents that the enforcement exercise would be carried out professionally, transparently, and in accordance with the law. He called on the public to cooperate with security personnel to ensure its success.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order across Sokoto State and urged all motorists to comply with the directive and other traffic regulations for the sake of public safety and national security.
