At least 20 people were killed when suspected bandits attacked the Fesken Rafi community in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State, raising fresh alarm over insecurity in the region.
The Kebbi State Government expressed deep sorrow, calling the incident tragic and offering condolences to the victims’ families and to residents of the affected community.
During a condolence visit on Saturday, Deputy Governor Umar Tafida assured residents that the state remains committed to tackling insecurity and protecting lives and property throughout Kebbi.
He announced the deployment of additional security personnel and operational resources to the area to strengthen security operations, restore normalcy, and prevent further attacks.
“We share in your grief and remain committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property across Kebbi State,” the deputy governor said.
Arewa Local Government Chairman Sani Tela and Kebbi State House of Assembly member for Arewa Constituency, Nuradeen Kangiwa, informed the delegation that the attack had taken place a few days earlier and had caused significant loss of life.
They praised Governor Nasir Idris for the administration’s efforts to combat insecurity and for its response to the plight of affected communities.
Traditional leaders, including Dikkon Kabi Alhaji Kabiru Sulaiman, who represents the Emir of Argungu Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, and District Head of Bui Alhaji Abubakar Dan-Malam, also commended the government’s intervention.
The traditional rulers called for the construction of a road linking Fesken Rafi to the main highway, arguing that improved access would enhance security response, facilitate economic activity, and improve residents’ living conditions.
The attack underscores the ongoing security challenges that rural communities in parts of Kebbi State face, despite continued efforts by security agencies and the state government to curb banditry and other criminal activities.
