The Kaduna State Police Command has condemned the killing of a woman who was accused of kidnapping and had been safely taken into police custody in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State.

This was announced in a statement issued by the police mouthpiece, DSP Mansir Hassan, on Sunday, 21 June 2026.

The police spokesman said that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maraban Jos received a distress call at about 10:00 a.m. reporting that a woman was being attacked by a crowd over allegations of kidnapping.

Police officers quickly moved to the scene, rescued the woman and brought her to the station for her safety while investigations began.

However, the situation later turned violent when hundreds of people reportedly surrounded the police station, overpowered officers and forcefully took the woman away.

“Despite this, a crowd numbering in their hundreds later stormed and besieged the police station, overpowered the officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman from custody, killed her and set her body ablaze,” the statement said.

The command described the act as barbaric, criminal and a direct assault on the rule of law, stressing that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands.

Police said several suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack, while efforts were ongoing to track down other people involved.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, warned that the command would not tolerate mob justice or attacks on police personnel and facilities.

The police added that a full investigation has commenced and all those responsible will face prosecution.
