The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and testimonials for several graduating secondary school students in Ondo State have been withheld due to misconduct that occurred during the final examinations.

The Ondo State Government said the penalty was necessary after 17 graduating students engaged in chaotic and undisciplined behaviour.

The State Ministry of Education reported that the students were captured in a viral video in which they tore their school uniforms and chanted unusual slogans after finishing their final paper.

The students were identified as belonging to Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School, all located in Akure, the state capital.

A video posted on TikTok and Facebook a few days earlier went viral across the state, showing students from the affected schools creating chaos in parts of the Akure metropolis, which has sparked widespread public outrage.

In an emergency meeting with school administrators and government officials, the ministry, via Commissioner for Education Igbekele Ajibefun, announced that the names of the 17 identified students would be entered into the “black book” of their respective schools.

Ajibefun added that principals have been instructed to maintain a “black book” for student misconduct, and senior officers at the affected schools have received official inquiries for failing to supervise adequately and permitting the celebrations to devolve into lawlessness.

“For those in the video who are not in the terminal class, the Ministry has directed that they be expelled from school immediately.”

The Commissioner also urged parents to consistently counsel their children against actions that could damage their futures.
