Some graduating secondary school students in Ondo State have had their WASSCE results and certificates withheld because of misconduct that occurred while they were completing their final exams.
The government said the penalty was necessary after 17 graduating students were involved in chaotic and undisciplined conduct.
The State Ministry of Education reported that the students were captured on a viral video tearing their school uniforms and chanting odd slogans after finishing their final paper.
The students were identified as belonging to Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School, all located in Akure, the state capital.
A video posted on TikTok and Facebook a few days earlier went viral across the state, showing students from the affected schools creating chaos in parts of the Akure metropolis, which has provoked widespread public outrage.
In an emergency meeting with school administrators and government officials, the ministry, via Commissioner for Education Igbekele Ajibefun, announced that the names of the 17 identified students would be entered into the “black book” of their respective schools.
Ajibefun added that principals have been instructed to establish a “black book” for student misconduct, and senior officers at the affected schools have received official inquiries for failing to supervise adequately and permitting the celebrations to devolve into law
