Former Senate Leader Ali Ndume has been selected as the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Borno South District in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Ndume announced his candidacy in a statement on Monday after being returned unopposed in an affirmation process at the primary venue in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

The lawmaker secured the consensus candidacy after his main rival, Abdullahi Askira, withdrew from the race last month.

Askira, the Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, said he chose not to contest for the ticket following extensive consultations and appeals from party stakeholders within the district.

According to DAILY POST, if Ndume wins the 2027 election, he would serve a fifth term in the National Assembly.

Ndume thanked the APC stakeholders in Borno South, the delegates, and all party members for the confidence placed in him to represent their interests at the National Assembly.

He also praised his former rival, Askira, for stepping aside in deference to the party elders in the senatorial zone.

“I want to thank our elders in the Borno South Senatorial District for their unwavering support for me,” he said. “I want to reassure them that I will continue to promote their interest at all times.”

“I must not fail to commend Honourable Askira, who listened to the persuasions and appeals of the party leaders and took the decision to drop his aspiration. Your loyalty to the party is exemplary,” he added.

Ndume urged party stakeholders to stay united and “continue to work as one united political family as the country prepares for the general elections.”
