The Kwara State Government has filed a criminal defamation suit against former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, alleging that he made defamatory remarks about Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The case was presented on Wednesday before the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin. The government claims that Saraki published and circulated statements on social media and in newspapers asserting that Governor AbdulRazaq did not complete secondary school education.

According to the single charge filed by the State Ministry of Justice, the statements are alleged to be false, insulting, and capable of provoking public disturbance, violating Section 399 of the Kwara State Penal Code.

During the proceedings, prosecution counsel Rafiu Balogun informed the court that the matter was scheduled for arraignment and requested a bench warrant be issued against Saraki for failing to appear in court after being served.

The prosecution also urged the court to dismiss an adjournment application filed by the defence, arguing that Saraki’s presence was essential for the arraignment to proceed.

In response, Saraki’s counsel Jimoh Mumini, SAN, challenged the jurisdiction of the state high court, asserting that the case falls under the Federal High Court’s authority and questioned the validity of the court processes served on his client.

After arguments from both sides and a two‑hour recess, Justice Mohammed Folorunso, the presiding judge, ruled that Saraki is entitled to seek an adjournment.

The court has adjourned the case until July 3, 2026, to hear the preliminary objection and potentially proceed with the defendant’s arraignment.
