Gbenga Sodeinde in Ekiti
Defenders of Civic Rights (DCR), a civil society organization based in Ekiti, praised veteran investigative journalist Babatunde Bamigboye—known as Omo Edema—for his role in uncovering crime, advancing justice, and giving a platform to vulnerable Nigerians.
In a statement released by spokesperson Laide Ojo, DCR described investigative journalism as an essential instrument for revealing crimes, exposing abuses, and holding offenders accountable, especially when victims are silenced by fear.
DCR noted that for over twenty years, Omo Edema has stood out as one of southwestern Nigeria’s most courageous investigative broadcasters and advocates for social justice.
Using undercover work, on‑the‑ground reporting, and community intelligence, he has uncovered criminal operations, human‑trafficking rings, alleged fraudulent religious practices, suspicious deaths, and other social injustices.
The group added that his investigative approach has earned him wide recognition and has drawn comparisons with the late broadcaster Kola Olawuyi, who was famed for exposing crime and social vices.
DCR cited several of his prominent investigations, such as the 2023 Leah Sunday human‑trafficking case, the 2025 inquiry into the death of Police Inspector Yusuf Suleiman Blessing—known as “BS Omo Alhaja”—and the widely debated Fakuade investigation, which examined alleged exploitation and abuses in rural communities.
The group also recalled that Omo Edema reportedly endured physical assaults and threats during some investigations, including an attack in 2018 while probing commercial transport operators in Ondo State.
Despite the risks, intimidation, and legal hurdles inherent in investigative journalism, DCR said Omo Edema has continued to expose wrongdoing and pursue justice for victims.
“His work has touched countless lives and brought public attention to issues that might otherwise have remained hidden. To many victims and ordinary citizens, he represents a voice for the voiceless and a symbol of hope that truth and justice can prevail,” the statement added.
