Germany secured their first opening‑match victory at a World Cup since lifting the trophy in 2014 by defeating debutants Curacao 7‑1 in Group E’s opener in Houston, Business Standard reports.
The last time Germany won a World Cup match 7‑1 was in the 2014 semi‑final against hosts Brazil.
With a win over the small Caribbean side, Germany now faces tougher opposition from Ecuador and Ivory Coast but is in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages for the first time since 2014.
An early German goal by Felix Nmecha was cancelled by a deflected strike from Livano Comenencia, sending Curacao fans – the Blue Wave – into the stands in Houston.
Germany’s scoreline was then secured by Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz (who netted twice), Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav, ending any realistic chance of a historic upset.

Despite the lopsided score, the match remains a historic moment for Curacao.
The Caribbean nation became the smallest country by both population and area ever to participate in a FIFA World Cup and scored its first-ever World Cup goal through Comenencia.
However, the step up in quality proved overwhelming against one of international football’s traditional powerhouses.
