The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to fighting terrorism, banditry and other security threats across the country. He emphasized that the army would achieve this through greater professionalism, operational effectiveness and joint security collaboration.
Shaibu made the statement on Monday as he opened the Chief of Army Staff First Bi‑Annual Conference 2026 at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre in Abuja.
The conference brought together principal staff officers, formation commanders, heads of military establishments, senior officers, regimental sergeant majors and representatives from other security agencies to discuss the nation’s security situation and operational strategies.
The army chief noted that troops have continued to achieve operational successes in several theatres, especially in the North‑East, North‑West and North‑Central regions.
According to him, soldiers have shown courage, resilience and professionalism in ongoing counter‑insurgency and anti‑banditry operations despite difficult conditions.
Shaibu said the Nigerian Army remains focused on protecting the country’s sovereignty and fostering a secure environment that allows socio‑economic activities to flourish.
He acknowledged that the military has faced setbacks in some operations, stressing that these challenges would not weaken the resolve of troops confronting criminal elements that threaten national security.
“Our journey has not been without setbacks, but the Nigerian Army remains resolute and committed to addressing all security challenges confronting our dear nation,” he said.
The COAS noted that the evolving nature of security threats demands innovative approaches, realistic operational assessments and stronger coordination among security agencies.
He explained that the conference was organized to review ongoing military operations, assess operational challenges and develop practical strategies to improve performance.
Shaibu reiterated his command philosophy of building a more professional, combat‑ready and adaptable army capable of effectively carrying out its constitutional duties within a joint and multi‑agency environment.
He also revealed that Army Headquarters has intensified support for troops through improved logistics, realistic training exercises and enhanced welfare initiatives.
The COAS further stressed the importance of discipline, loyalty and professionalism, urging officers and soldiers to uphold high standards and strictly follow operational rules of engagement.
He praised troops for their sacrifices and patriotism in defending the country and assured them of continued support from Army Headquarters and the Federal Government.
