World Cup: Tuchel confirms another major injury for England

England coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed that defender Jarell Quansah suffered a twisted ankle during the team’s 2‑0 win over Panama, raising new concerns about the right‑back position.

Quansah was named in the starting XI for Saturday’s final group match after Reece James was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

The Chelsea captain is now doubtful for England’s last‑32 match on Wednesday. England had already lost Tino Livramento to injury just a day before the campaign began, and James’ absence has created a significant gap at right‑back.

Although Djed Spence was available, Tuchel opted for Quansah to start against Panama. The player was forced to leave the field after 64 minutes following a challenge from Jose Luis Rodriguez.

England secured the top spot in Group L with the victory.

In his post‑match press conference, Tuchel said Quansah was “in pain” and would likely miss Wednesday’s last‑32 game against either Senegal or DR Congo.

“Classic ankle twist,” Tuchel explained when asked about the former Liverpool defender. “He is in pain. He mentioned he has experienced this before, and it typically takes a matter of days. He has his leg elevated and iced.”

Quansah’s injury limits Tuchel’s options at right‑back. While Djed Spence is available, he has also been used as a backup at left‑back.
