World Cup: Rooney says Konsa’s tackle on Ghana player was a penalty

Wayne Rooney, an England icon, said the referee should have awarded a penalty in the World Cup match against Ghana on Tuesday night.

The Three Lions finished the game in a 0-0 draw with the Black Stars, keeping both sides unbeaten in the tournament.

Rooney voiced his view on BBC’s Match of the Day, suggesting that England were lucky.

He explained that a penalty should have been awarded because Ezri Konsa made contact with the player instead of the ball during the tackle.

The penalty incident became a key talking point, especially as Ghana dominated possession.

Both sides struggled to create chances, and the missed call could have significantly altered the result.

In the 79th minute, Ghana winger Abdul Fatawu won possession and passed through to Prince Adu.

The striker was tackled in the penalty area by a desperate behind challenge from Ezri Konsa, but the referee deemed it fair and legal.

VAR did not intervene or prompt a review, letting England avoid a possible foul.

Rooney said, “I think that’s a penalty. Konsa takes a huge risk. His feet are off the floor when he comes flying in and he gets the man, not the ball.”
