Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi praised Nigerian musician Davido for drawing international attention to the country’s security issues during the World Cup tournament.

Obi made the comments in a Facebook post on Monday, reflecting on Nigeria’s absence from the FIFA World Cup and the need for stronger leadership to unlock the country’s human potential.

He said Nigeria’s failure to qualify was not a lack of talent but a result of inadequate structures and leadership to develop sporting and youth potential.

Obi noted that Nigerian performers at the global event, as well as Nigerian‑born players representing other nations, highlight the country’s untapped human resources.

He urged political leaders to create an enabling environment that allows young Nigerians to thrive in sports and other fields.

Obi also commended Davido for a “remarkable gesture” that raised awareness about insecurity in Nigeria on the world stage.

The singer wore a custom black leather jacket emblazoned with “BRING THEM HOME,” along with green buttons bearing the names of schoolchildren reportedly abducted in Oyo State, a move that, according to Obi, spotlighted the plight of victims of insecurity.

He said the act went beyond entertainment, helping bring international attention to the situation of the abducted children and broader security concerns in the country.

Obi added that while Nigeria continues to face security challenges, there is hope for improvement if the right policies and leadership commitments are implemented.
