Former USA international Taylor Twellman has said that Portugal perform best when Cristiano Ronaldo does not play.
The former New England Revolution forward made the remark a few weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup began.
Ronaldo is preparing to make history at the World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Al‑Nassr forward will be appearing in his sixth World Cup, with only Argentina captain Lionel Messi in a position to match the excitement this summer.
Speaking to ESPN, Twellman stated, “For Portugal, and I am going to make a bold statement here, this is the best team Ronaldo has ever had around him at a World Cup.”
“I actually think Portugal is at their best if he doesn’t play.”
Portugal is placed in Group K for the tournament and will face DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia.
Roberto Martínez’s side will play friendly matches against Chile and Nigeria before the tournament starts in June.
