Former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has dismissed Morocco and South Africa as unlikely surprise teams, instead pointing to another African side that could shock the world at the 2026 World Cup.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup began on Thursday, with Mexico defeating South Africa 2‑0 in the opening match.
Ten African nations are competing in the tournament, which is being staged across Mexico, Canada and the United States.
The teams are Algeria, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia.
Giroud believes that Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire or Ghana could be the unexpected performers.
“One of the African teams can be the surprise team,” Giroud said, as quoted by BBC Sport.
“Maybe Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal or Ghana – they are all dangerous teams on their day.”
