Mothers and other residents of Odion Road in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State marched peacefully with placards yesterday, demanding an end to the recent wave of cult killings in the area.
Last Sunday, a man was shot dead on Urhobo Road, and the following day, a young man was killed by suspected cultists on Iyara Road.
Earlier that Saturday, a young man survived bullet injuries after an attack by suspected cultists in the neighborhood.
The march took place along Odion Road and adjacent streets, with participants chanting “We want peace.” Placards read “We want peace,” “Enough of the killings,” and “People’s children are dying,” among others.
Protesters said they live in fear, and local businesses have been affected. “We are afraid to bring our tables out in the evening to do our petty sales since the killings started,” said a woman who identified herself as Stella.
Stella recalled that the man killed on Sunday had bought a sachet of hot drink from a vendor on Urhobo Road and was shot while sitting to drink. “We are all afraid to do our petty businesses at night. The killings even occurred in the daytime,” she added.
Another unnamed protester said the suspected cultists on Monday targeted a young man who had just finished bathing in a makeshift bathroom on Iyara Road and shot him at close range. “They went for their target who had just finished bathing in the bathroom outside the compound and opened fire on him. It was clear that somebody monitored the boy and called those who came to do the killing, or they were waiting around,” she said.
“We don’t know what may happen tonight. So, as mothers, we are begging for an end. I heard the one killed on Sunday was a father and a married man. We don’t know who is responsible for the killings. Some people say it is cult related. We are begging them to stop,” she said.
