Representatives of the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic groups in Delta State have reached a power‑sharing agreement for the proposed Warri Federal Constituency II after President Bola Tinubu intervened to resolve a long‑standing dispute over the delineation of electoral wards in the area.
The accord was formalised during a meeting held at the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, in Abuja. The session followed an earlier gathering between President Tinubu and representatives of the Ijaw, Itsekiri and Urhobo peoples from Warri Federal Constituency at the Presidential Villa on June 11. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State also attended the meeting.
In the resolution signed by Ijaw and Itsekiri delegates and witnessed by other stakeholders, the parties agreed to a rotational arrangement for the House of Representatives seat in the proposed constituency. Under the terms, the Ijaw nationality will hold the seat for two consecutive terms before it passes to the Itsekiri for an equivalent period.
The two‑hour meeting at the NSA’s office was chaired by Ribadu and attended by the Director‑General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi.
The power‑sharing deal is expected to reduce tensions that had arisen from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) ward‑delineation exercise, which had sparked disagreements among the ethnic groups in Warri.
President Tinubu had instructed two representatives from each of the three ethnic nationalities to meet under federal supervision to build on the outcomes of the June 11 meeting and develop a mutually acceptable framework for political representation in the new constituency.
For the Ijaw nationality, the agreement was signed by former Deputy Governor of Delta State Kingsley Otuaro and Dr. Eric Omare. For the Itsekiri nationality, Sir A.S. Mene and Chief Robinson Ariyo signed the document. National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu signed on behalf of the Federal Government, while Olorogun Victor Okumagba and Chief Westham Adehor witnessed the agreement.
The resolution is viewed as a significant step toward maintaining peace and promoting political inclusiveness among the ethnic groups in Warri ahead of future elections.
