Wamakko demands urgent security overhaul over killings

By Musa Ubandawaki, Sokoto

Former Sokoto State Governor and Senator, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, has raised concern over rising cases of killings, kidnappings and violent attacks across Nigeria, calling for urgent reforms of the country’s security architecture.

Wamakko made the call while speaking on the floor of the Senate in Abuja, warning that the worsening security situation poses a serious threat to national stability and public confidence.

According to a statement from his Media Office, the senator said protecting lives and property remains the core responsibility of government, stressing that the continued loss of innocent lives to criminal activity is unacceptable.

He cited recent incidents across several states, including abductions in Oyo State, kidnappings in Ibadan, killings in Kwara State, and attacks in parts of Borno State, as evidence of the growing insecurity across the country.

Wamakko also condemned the recent attacks on communities in Sokoto State, describing the violence as tragic and unacceptable, particularly as rural areas continue to suffer repeated assaults.

He called for increased intelligence gathering, improved funding and equipment for security agencies, and stronger collaboration between security forces, traditional rulers and local communities.

The senator urged both federal and state governments to work more closely in addressing the crisis, noting that a coordinated national response is essential to defeating criminal networks.

Following deliberations, the Senate resolved to engage security chiefs over the situation and consider further legislative measures aimed at strengthening national security and protecting citizens.
