US warns of atrocities in Sudan’s El Obeid, rules out a military solution.

The United States expressed deep concern on Monday after reports that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and associated combatants were concentrating troops around El Obeid in Sudan.

Washington said the buildup heightens the danger of violence against civilians, including attacks on infrastructure, and could further inflame the conflict in El Obeid and the wider Kordofan region.

The U.S. echoed warnings from the United Nations and the European Union that the signs of imminent mass atrocities could exacerbate Sudan’s already catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

The government urged the RSF and allied forces to stop any actions that threaten civilians, obstruct humanitarian aid, or contribute to additional atrocities and suffering.

According to the State Department, the belligerents must fulfill their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and allow those seeking safety to do so freely.

“This war has exacted an intolerable toll on the Sudanese people,” the statement read. “Civilians have suffered immensely from the devastation caused by this conflict.”

However, the U.S. made it clear that “There is no military solution to this conflict,” and called on the warring parties to pursue a settlement that ends the violence and addresses the population’s suffering.

The Trump Administration maintains that only through peace and stability can Sudan return to independent civilian‑led governance, preserve its unity, and fulfill the aspirations of its people.

Washington says it is working with partners and Sudanese stakeholders to advance a humanitarian truce, secure humanitarian access, and achieve a civilian transition and durable peace.
