US Reps pass resolution to halt Iran war

The United States House of Representatives has adopted a resolution that aims to prevent President Donald Trump from pursuing further military action in Iran.

The vote, which ended 215‑208, was largely symbolic but succeeded after four Republicans joined Democrats in publicly opposing the conflict that began in February.

The resolution, known as the war powers resolution, would require the president to withdraw U.S. forces or obtain congressional approval for the conflict.

It is uncertain how much legal authority the House measure would carry. The White House has dismissed the resolution as an unconstitutional attempt to limit presidential power.

This marks the fourth effort by the House to curb Trump’s war powers. The Senate approved a similar resolution in May but has not yet held a full floor vote.

The measure considered on Wednesday was a concurrent resolution. If it also passes the Republican‑controlled Senate, it would not need the president’s signature, though it could face a legal challenge.

In the House, Republicans Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson joined a united front of Democrats to pass the resolution. Democrat Jared Golden of Maine, who had previously voted against similar measures, supported it this time.

“Congress alone declares war, that’s something certainly we need to be protective of,” said Tom Barrett, a Republican from Michigan.

When asked whether he feared retaliation from Trump for his vote, Barrett replied, “I vote my conscience for what I think is right and willing to accept that.”

Representative Gregory Meeks, the leading Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, described the vote as “a significant bipartisan rebuke of President Trump’s illegal and costly war in Iran and the first step toward ending it once and for all.”

Meeks said that Trump had failed to achieve the war’s stated objectives while driving up fuel prices at home and making a diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear program even more difficult.

“The passage of this [measure] today signals a significant turning point: more and more Republicans are listening to their constituents who do not want another open‑ended war in the Middle East,” Meeks, who co‑sponsored the resolution, said.

The U.S. and Israel launched unprovoked strikes against Iran on 28 February. Iran responded by attacking Israel and U.S.‑allied states in the Gulf and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global shipping.
