Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has announced that it will close its Ifetedo Campus indefinitely after the death of 400‑level Criminology and Security Studies student Miss Grace Osunlakin.

The decision was communicated in a statement released on Thursday by the university’s public‑relations officer, Ademola Adesoji.

In the statement, the university referred to the incident as a tragic loss that had profoundly impacted the institution and its community.

According to the statement, “Osunlakin reportedly died on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, prompting the university authorities to review the situation and take immediate measures aimed at maintaining calm on the campus.”

The university expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death and offered condolences to her family, fellow students, and all stakeholders affected by the event.

“The University Management extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the student community, and all stakeholders affected by this unfortunate incident,” the statement said.

It explained that the indefinite closure was the result of a careful assessment of the circumstances surrounding the death and the necessity of giving students time to process their emotions.

The university said the temporary shutdown would allow a thorough review of the campus’s healthcare facilities, medical staff, and water‑supply systems.

According to the management, “the review forms part of broader efforts to address longstanding challenges associated with the campus and improve conditions for students and staff.”

The statement reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to safeguarding the safety, welfare, and well‑being of all university members.

The university promised a comprehensive investigation into the incident and the implementation of measures to prevent a recurrence.

“May Almighty God grant the family of the deceased, the students, and the entire University community the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement added.

The management urged students, parents, and other stakeholders to stay calm and cooperate with the university as it works to resolve the identified issues and resume normal academic operations at the campus.
