UNICAL suspends Wednesday lectures as preparations ramp up for NUGA 2026

The University of Calabar, UNICAL, has suspended all lectures and practical classes on Wednesdays to allow student‑athletes to focus on preparations for the 28th edition of the Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA), scheduled for November 2026.

Vice Chancellor Prof Offiong Offiong announced the change during a Thursday press briefing, outlining the university’s readiness to host the prestigious sporting event for the first time since 1990.

Offiong said the decision is part of a broader strategy to ensure UNICAL performs strongly at the competition, emphasizing the university’s ambition to both host and finish among the top performers.

He noted that more than 50 public and private universities have already expressed interest in participating, and that Calabar is expected to welcome over 50,000 athletes, officials and supporters for the event.

The Vice Chancellor explained that participating institutions will compete in 28 sporting events, and that UNICAL has incorporated NUGA preparations into its academic calendar to give student‑athletes ample training time.

“Our students have been training intensively for the competition. To demonstrate our determination to lead the medals table, we have directed that no lectures or practicals should be held on Wednesdays so that participating students can concentrate fully on their training,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor also revealed that the university is constructing a modern sports complex as part of the infrastructure being developed ahead of the games.
He commended the support of the Cross River State Government, describing Governor Bassey Otu as a key partner in the hosting arrangements.

According to him, the governor has pledged to provide resources for the event as chief host, while the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and members of the National Assembly from the state have also assured the university of support.

Offiong expressed confidence in the institution’s readiness to host the competition, assuring athletes, officials and visitors of a memorable experience.

“Without any hesitation, we are ready and willing to welcome and host athletes, officials and spectators from across Nigeria and beyond. We are committed to delivering a successful competition that reflects the values of excellence, fair play and sportsmanship that NUGA represents,” he stated.
