Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works, said on Saturday that the South‑Eastern region would remain loyal to President Bola Tinubu, citing the large number of federal projects underway in the area.
Umahi made the remarks while inspecting federal works in Ebonyi State’s Onueke, located in the Ezza‑South Local Government Area, as part of the Renewed Hope National Media Tour.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the inspected projects included the dualisation of the Onueke highway and the construction of a flyover, as well as the Abakaliki‑Afikpo‑Ndibe Beach Trans‑Sahara Highway.
Regarding the Onueke highway, Umahi described the project as a strategic initiative for economic growth and one of President Tinubu’s legacy projects for the Southeast.
“This road aims to improve transportation and drive economic growth in the country,” the minister said.
Maxwell Okonkwo, the acting Federal Controller of Works in Ebonyi, explained that the 90‑metre flyover, which extends 2.2 kilometres on either side, is intended to relieve traffic congestion on the route.
He added that the project would boost economic activity along the corridor and facilitate the movement of agricultural produce and other goods.
“Ebonyi has a large agricultural output and minerals such as granite and lead that need to be transported to neighboring states,” Okonkwo said. “The flyover decongests traffic and stimulates economic activity on this route.”
Ali Moses, a resident of Abaomege Community in Onicha Local Government Area, praised the federal government’s work in the state, especially the Abakaliki‑Apkoha‑Afikpo highway.
“I thank God that the construction of the road is happening on time. It’s a good thing for our people and the entire southeastern region,” Moses told NAN.
