Arsenal legend Martin Keown has urged manager Mikel Arteta to consider dropping two players – Kai Havertz and Viktor Györke – after the club’s painful Champions League final loss to Paris Saint‑Germain.
The Gunners had hoped to win their first Champions League trophy in Budapest, but were eliminated when PSG prevailed 4‑3 in a penalty shootout following a 1‑1 draw after extra time.
Arsenal took the lead through Havertz, only for Ousmane Dembélé to level the score with a penalty in the second half.
The match finished 1‑1 after 120 minutes, and PSG handled the pressure better in the shootout, securing the title.
Eberechi Eze was the first Arsenal player to miss a penalty, followed by Gabriel, whose shot went over the bar.
Arsenal will look to move on from the defeat by celebrating their first Premier League title since 2004 with a trophy parade in north London on Sunday, joined by supporters.
Arteta said he would spend some time with his family before refocusing on the new season and the summer transfer window.
The club is expected to back Arteta with substantial financial support, and Keown believes Arsenal should look for a new striker.
Havertz, who scored his second goal in a Champions League final against PSG, has struggled with fitness all season, starting only seven league matches.
£64 million summer signing Viktor Györke has had a mixed debut season at the Emirates Stadium and was omitted from the squad for the club’s most important match of the year.
When asked about areas for improvement this summer, Keown told TNT Sports, “They may reconsider their options at striker.”
“Kai Havertz completed 90 minutes tonight, but this marks only his second full match in 18 months.”
“For Viktor Györke, it was a challenging evening, so that could be a position Arsenal might evaluate. Perhaps they should also consider the left‑wing. Mikel Arteta will need to assess these options closely.”
