Five people were confirmed dead and ten others were seriously injured in a fatal road accident that took place on Thursday at Iyana Egbado on the Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway.
The incident involved a white Mazda E2000 bus, registration KRD809XC, carrying 20 passengers. The crash occurred at approximately 11:12 a.m.
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun State Sector Command spokesperson Odunsi Afolabi said the bus’s passengers included six adult males, eleven adult females, one male child and two female children.
Afolabi reported that two children, one man and two women died in the collision. Ten passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries, while five were unharmed.
“The crash occurred at about 11:12 a.m. and was reported at 11:15 h. FRSC rescue operatives from RS2.28 Itori Unit Command arrived at the scene at 11:20 h, with a response time of five minutes,” Afolabi said.
“Out of the twenty persons involved, five were killed: one adult male, two adult females, one male child and one female child. Ten persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, while five escaped unhurt,” the statement added.
Afolabi attributed the crash to excessive speed and overloading. The injured were taken to General Hospital, Ifo, and Oreofe Specialist Hospital, Itori, for immediate medical care, while the deceased were transferred to the General Hospital Morgue, Ifo.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the probable causes of the crash were speeding and overloading. The road was paved and the weather condition at the time of the incident was cloudy,” he said.
Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and urged motorists to avoid speeding, overloading and other traffic violations that endanger lives. He also reminded drivers to strictly observe traffic rules and regulations, especially during the festive period, emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility.
