Rapidly changing demographics, the influx of “other” immigrants, and health‑security concerns are reshaping global movement. While some countries are easing restrictions, others are tightening immigration controls.

The next World Cup will run for 39 days across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The opening match, on June 11, is Mexico versus South Africa.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) national team faces uncertainty about its second World Cup appearance, having last appeared in 1974 as Zaire.

Juan Franco, mayor of Spain’s La Línea, made headlines on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when he announced the cancellation of a friendly warm‑up match with the DRC after the regional government’s health service recommended precautionary measures. “I have signed the decree banning the holding of the match between the DR Congo and Chile,” he said, citing health risks.

Andrew Giuliani, son of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, was appointed in May 2025 as executive director of the White House Task Force for the World Cup. He told ESPN: “We’ve been very clear to (DR) Congo that they should maintain the integrity of their bubble for 21 days before they can then come to Houston on June 11… We’ve made it very clear to the Congo government… We want to make sure that there is nothing that’s going to come in or near our borders here on this.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Travel Association has expressed major concerns about what some immigration‑rights organizations view as President Trump’s harsh immigration policies, which they say focus on “aggressively restricting both legal and undocumented immigration.”

The association cautions that deploying U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at World Cup matches could be disruptive: “Millions of international visitors will face the same disruption, and with the FIFA World Cup weeks away, the damage to America’s reputation as a welcoming destination would be significant and lasting.”

Other factors affecting local attendance and international participation include special orders and decrees issued by the Trump administration.

One report noted that the administration’s actions could deter World Cup fans already in the United States, with ICE conducting highly visible and often violent mass arrests and detentions of noncitizens in homes, schools, workplaces, and other public spaces. The fear of arrest among immigrant communities—and those who may be profiled as undocumented—has a chilling effect throughout the country.

Those immigrant communities are, in fact, the organic base, formidable ambassadors, and lifelong soccer fans in the United States. Let the soccer clashes begin!
