Togo Becomes the Sixth African Country to Grant Visa-Free Entry for Africans

In a significant step toward greater continental integration, Togo has announced that it will allow all African citizens to enter the country without a visa. The new policy, which began on Monday, grants African passport holders a 30‑day visa exemption, according to an early‑Tuesday statement from the Ministry of Security.

Security Minister Calixte Madjoulba said the decision reflects the Togolese government’s commitment to promoting African unity, easing the movement of people and goods, and strengthening regional cooperation. He added that the initiative is part of a broader effort to increase openness, modernise the country, and enhance its appeal, with the ultimate goal of positioning Togo as a regional hub for services, business, culture, and human exchange in the heart of Africa.

Although the visa requirement has been removed, the ministry emphasized that travelers must still comply with standard security, immigration, and public health protocols. Visitors are required to submit an online travel declaration at least 24 hours before arrival. The declaration will generate a mandatory travel document that must be presented at border checkpoints.

Minister Madjoulba warned that the visa exemption does not create a loophole for irregular entry or illegal residency, and that national security measures will continue to be strictly enforced at all land, air, and sea entry points.

With this move, Togo joins a select group of countries, including Rwanda and Kenya, that are leading the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision, which promotes a borderless continent and a unified African passport. While the implementation of continental free movement has historically been slow, momentum appears to be growing. Just last week, Nigeria reciprocated Rwanda’s open‑border policy by granting Rwandan citizens a similar 30‑day visa‑free entry.
