Taraba APC at a Crossroads as 2027 Governorship Race Intensifies

Tensions are rising within the Taraba state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party struggles to reach a consensus on its elective candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The dispute, which has already affected both state and federal legislative ticket ambitions, has now intensified over the governorship race, revealing deep rifts among key party figures.

At the heart of the conflict is incumbent Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas, who is campaigning for a second term under the APC banner.

His bid is being challenged by two prominent rivals: philanthropist Chief David Sabo Kente and former Minister of Transportation Mu’azu Jaji Sambo.

Party insiders report that intense negotiations and behind‑the‑scenes consultations are underway as the state leadership seeks a consensus candidate to avoid a divisive primary.

In an effort to ease mounting tensions, Governor Kefas held a closed‑door meeting with Chief David Sabo Kente on Friday night.

Sources close to the discussion say it focused on reconciling disgruntled factions and persuading Kente to reconsider his opposition to the proposed consensus arrangement that would support the governor’s re‑election.

The meeting followed Kente’s public declaration in Wukari, where he rejected earlier consensus overtures and called for a transparent and credible selection process for the party’s governorship candidate.

Meanwhile, former Transportation Minister Mu’azu Jaji Sambo has maintained a firm stance against the consensus option, arguing that only a direct primary can ensure fairness and credibility in selecting the party’s candidate.

Sambo has reportedly intensified consultations across the state, urging party members in all 168 electoral wards to rally support for his candidacy ahead of the primaries.

Political analysts say the outcome of the negotiations between Governor Kefas and Kente will ultimately determine whether the Taraba APC can preserve internal unity or whether it will descend into a fiercely contested and unpredictable governorship primary.
