Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle likened to Westerhof ahead of Unity cup finals

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Alloy Agu has compared Eric Chelle’s coaching approach to that of the 1994 AFCON‑winning manager Clemens Westerhof, Afrik Foot reports.

Westerhof, a Dutch manager, led the “Golden Generation” of Nigerian football to the 1994 African Cup of Nations triumph and the country’s first appearance at the FIFA World Cup, where they narrowly missed a quarter‑final berth.

Since assuming the Super Eagles’ reins in January 2025, Chelle has established a solid foundation, keeping the team undefeated in 90‑minute matches.

Agu likens Eric Chelle to Clemens Westerhof

In an interview with Complete Sports, Agu praised Chelle’s decision to travel across the country to watch local matches, saying it will inspire players in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and give them a realistic chance of national team selection—an approach that Westerhof employed during his tenure.

“That was what Clemens Westerhof used to do during his time with the Super Eagles. By doing that, players in the domestic league were given opportunities in the national team,” the 58‑year‑old said.

“That was how their development and exposure started, so much so that some eventually moved to Europe.”

“I think Coach Chelle’s presence at the stadium was a major encouragement to the players because seeing the senior national team coach watching them could motivate them to earn invitations to the Super Eagles camp,” Agu continued.

The former goalkeeping coach also expressed confidence that Chelle would lead Nigeria to success in the upcoming Unity Cup later this month.

“Nigeria has always been a strong football nation both within and outside Africa. It is a respected name in world football and I think this tournament will serve as good preparation for the next AFCON qualifiers,” the 1994‑winning goalkeeper said. “We have the players. We just need to be more organised in terms of preparation and, with that done, I have no doubts the Super Eagles will always deliver.”

Nigeria’s Unity Cup tournament will begin with the semi‑final against Zimbabwe on 26 May at The Valley stadium, the home of Charlton Athletic.
