Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), said he will use his detention to keep mobilising the public.
The announcement follows a Monday ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre until Wednesday.
Daily Post reports that Justice Mohammed Umar, presiding judge, issued the order after revoking Sowore’s bail the previous week.
The decision followed Justice Umar's dismissal of Sowore’s motion to have the judge recuse himself. The case concerns allegations from the Department of State Services that Sowore publicly called President Bola Tinubu a criminal.
Sowore, a human‑rights activist, remained defiant, saying the detention would not halt his activism.
“I’m going to prison to keep mobilizing our people. The court was told by the prosecution that they must insist on sending me to Kuje Prison until Wednesday.”
“I came prepared. I even brought my prison bag. All these are happening for a good reason. Somebody must make sacrifices that will benefit this country,” he said.
He said his recent absence from court, which led to the bail revocation, was because of legal consultations.
He noted that Justice Umar ordered the remand for that single absence, despite his new lead counsel, Olumide‑Fusika, SAN, having formally informed the court that Sowore was consulting with his legal team.
“I need hardly say that I am the least bothered by this development. Imprisonment has never defeated a just cause, and it never will,” he added.
