Singer YCee laments that social media virality undermines real talent.

Nigerian rapper and singer YCee has expressed concerns that the accessibility of platforms such as TikTok, which allow users to gain popularity without the intervention of traditional music‑industry gatekeepers, is lowering the overall talent standard in the industry.

In a recent interview with Naija FM in Lagos, the “Jagaban” singer explained that this trend has prompted many record‑label executives to prioritize artists who are already trending online over those who possess genuine talent.

YCee also noted that social‑media virality has introduced a wave of “half‑baked musicians” and “accident artists” into the music scene.

He attributed the decline in lyrical depth within the industry to the rise of social‑media fame.

“Platforms like TikTok have made it easier for a lot of people to create music to the extent that even someone who is not an artist would start posing as one once they produce a sound that goes viral,” YCee said.

“Sadly, music executives with power and funding no longer focus only on talent—they are now chasing virality.”
