Shettima urges CCB to stay apolitical and keep digitizing to uphold global standards

Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima instructed the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to remain apolitical and uphold strict independence, emphasizing that these principles are essential for integrity, transparency, and accountability.

He also urged the bureau to continue its digitization efforts, creating a system that allows public officers to declare assets and liabilities electronically from any location. This would eliminate the delays and inefficiencies associated with paper forms and align the bureau’s practices with international standards.

The remarks were made on Friday when the Vice President received a delegation from the CCB, led by its chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Usman Bello, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Shettima congratulated Bello and his team on their new appointments, while warning them against becoming entangled in controversies.

“Remain steadfast. Be as apolitical as humanly possible and do your job as much as you can,” the Vice President told the delegation, acknowledging the bureau’s current initiatives, particularly in digitization, and noting that the world is changing and the bureau must keep pace.

VP Shettima advised the CCB chairman to pursue the digitization path, stressing the bureau’s crucial role in promoting a positive image for Nigeria.

“There is no need for public officials thronging your offices to fill in forms. And you can hold them to account, since it has been digitized. You expect everyone to play by the rules,” the Vice President added.

Earlier, Dr. Bello thanked President Bola Tinubu and the Vice President for appointing a new team to head the CCB and for increasing the bureau’s budget. He highlighted that the CCB has undergone several reforms, including the digitization of its processes.

He reported that the bureau has enhanced verification, investigation, and prosecution, resulting in several recoveries both within Nigeria and abroad, including in London.

The CCB head assured that with sufficient empowerment and support from the federal government, the bureau will continue its anti‑corruption work for the betterment of the country.
