The Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Federal Government to release Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), immediately.

Daily Post previously reported that Justice Mohammed Umar of the Abuja Federal High Court, on Monday, ordered Sowore to be remanded to the Kuje Correctional Centre while his application to stay the execution of an earlier bail revocation order is considered.

Justice Umar also dismissed an application seeking his recusal from the case on grounds of alleged bias.

In a statement signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP urged the Federal Government to drop all criminal defamation and cybercrime charges against Sowore.

According to SERAP, Sowore’s detention is solely due to his peaceful exercise of fundamental rights.

“We are concerned about the escalating crackdown on the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association and media freedom and the flagrant disregard for the rule of law by Nigerian authorities,” SERAP said.
