Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, clarified that the Senate Public Accounts Committee was not created to “witch‑hunt” public officials. Instead, he said the committee’s purpose is to enhance accountability and transparency in governance by overseeing government agencies.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Tuesday, Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District, defended the oversight role of the National Assembly. He explained that the committee’s investigations aim to improve governance rather than punish individuals.

The senator noted that the Public Accounts Committee and its Appropriations counterpart are the only two constitutionally recognised committees required in the national assembly. He added that parliamentary convention dictates the Appropriations Committee be chaired by a member of the ruling party, while the Public Accounts Committee is headed by an opposition member to ensure impartial oversight.

“The work of the public accounts committee should not necessarily be viewed as a probe designed to expose and punish individuals. Its primary responsibility is oversight and accountability,” Bamidele said.

He highlighted that most of the committee’s investigations stem from reports submitted by the Auditor‑General for the Federation, which contain observations and findings on government agencies and institutions.

According to Bamidele, the national assembly remains committed to openness and public accountability. He noted that even executive sessions are typically followed by media briefings to keep Nigerians informed of key decisions.

The senate leader pointed out that issues that attract widespread public attention are often more complex than they appear. Lawmakers must consider factors such as investor confidence, economic stability, and whether identified lapses have already been addressed through reforms.

He added that oversight interventions frequently lead to reforms, administrative changes and corrective actions, even when such outcomes are not immediately visible to the public.

Bamidele said that collaboration between the legislature and the executive has helped strengthen institutions and improve governance outcomes.

He assured that the senate will continue to prioritise accountability, transparency and effective oversight as part of its commitment to deepening democracy and promoting good governance.
