Security alert after ISIS releases footage of military‑grade weapons seized in Niger

A video claimed to have been released by the Islamic State (ISIS) after an assault on the Nigerien military base in Inates has appeared online, reportedly depicting a cache of military‑grade weapons seized during the attack.

The clip, shared across social media, seems to display heavy weaponry such as artillery rockets, machine guns and anti‑aircraft guns that were allegedly taken from the base.

Bakatsine, a journalist noted for covering conflict and insecurity in Nigeria’s north‑west, posted the footage on Sunday.

Neither the authenticity of the video nor the precise number of weapons shown have been independently confirmed.

Bakatsine noted that the incident has heightened worries about the expanding capabilities of terrorist groups across the Sahel, where jihadist organisations have increased attacks on military targets in recent years.

Security analysts have cautioned that weapons seized in such attacks can substantially bolster insurgent groups and exacerbate instability in the region.

According to the report, while there is no evidence that the weapons displayed in the video have been transported into Nigeria, experts have long warned that the porous border between Niger and northern Nigeria facilitates the movement of fighters, weapons, and logistics.

Bakatsine cautioned that terrorist groups active across the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin maintain operational and logistical connections, raising fears about the broader regional impact of such seizures.

The assault on the Inates base highlights the ongoing security challenges confronting Sahelian countries—Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso—where extremist groups persist in targeting military installations.

The incident has reignited demands for enhanced intelligence collection, tighter border security and greater regional cooperation to stop terrorist groups from acquiring more military hardware.
