Iran intercepts U.S.-made weapons carried by Iraqi groups

In March 2024 Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced that it had intercepted and seized a shipment of U.S.-made weapons that had been smuggled into Iraq for use by Iranian‑backed militias. The cache, reportedly consisting of small arms, ammunition and explosives, was seized by Iranian forces at the Iran‑Iraq border and later handed over to Iraqi authorities, who said the weapons were intended for groups such as Kata’ib Hezbollah and other Popular Mobilization Forces units. The incident heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington over arms flows in the region. Views Nigeria
