SDP to confront corruption, insecurity, and poverty in 2027 – Adebayo

ABUJA — Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, has pledged to confront corruption, insecurity and poverty directly if elected. He argues that Nigeria can regain its former greatness through credible leadership and people‑oriented governance.

In a statement outlining his vision for Nigeria ahead of the 2027 polls, Adebayo reaffirmed the SDP’s commitment to the principles that led to its victory in the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola.

The candidate said he was honoured to lead the party into the 2027 elections, stressing that the SDP has remained true to its founding principles since its formation.

“I am deeply honoured to have been chosen to lead the Social Democratic Party into the 2027 election. It is a party I have belonged to since 1991 and one which stands true to its principles,” he said.

Adebayo criticised what he described as a growing crisis within opposition parties, accusing many politicians of prioritising defections and political survival over the welfare of Nigerians.

According to him, the SDP stands apart because of its unity, ideology and determination to rescue Nigeria from bad governance.

“The SDP is different. It is a party unified both in politics and in vision. We possess a shared determination to remove a government that has for too long ignored the plight of everyday Nigerians,” he stated.

Adebayo accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of failing to address the nation’s economic and security challenges, saying the country has been trapped in a cycle of hardship and stagnation.

“The incompetence of the incumbent government has led our country into a vicious and endless cycle that is preventing Nigeria from fulfilling its true destiny,” he said.

The SDP presidential candidate identified corruption, insecurity and poverty as the three biggest obstacles to Nigeria’s progress.

He said corruption has become a major economic burden, depriving Nigerians of development and prosperity.

“Every naira stolen into private pockets is a hospital not staffed, a road not built, a military not equipped or poverty not addressed,” he said.

He insisted that Nigeria’s poverty is not due to a lack of resources but to the mismanagement of public wealth by the political elite.

“Nigerians are not poor because the country is poor. Nigeria is blessed with enormous natural and human resources, but the political class has treated public office like private business,” he added.

Adebayo promised that an SDP government would launch immediate and aggressive anti‑corruption reforms from its first day in office.

“Under the SDP, the era of corruption ends on day one. No delays, no excuses,” he declared.

He said the party would strengthen anti‑corruption institutions, enforce transparency in governance and unveil comprehensive reforms in the coming months.

On insecurity, Adebayo said successive governments had failed Nigerians, especially communities in Northern Nigeria ravaged by terrorism, banditry and violent attacks.

“Our Northern brothers and sisters have paid the heaviest price as terrorists and bandits roam freely across their lands,” he said.

He pledged to prioritise the welfare of military personnel and security agencies through improved funding, intelligence gathering, infrastructure and better remuneration.

“Security is not a privilege. It is the first responsibility of government,” he stated.

The SDP candidate argued that military action alone would not solve insecurity, insisting that poverty, neglect and underdevelopment were fuelling violence across many parts of the country.

According to him, the party would implement massive development programmes in Northern Nigeria through investments in education, healthcare, roads and water infrastructure.

“In collaboration with local governments, we will confront poverty directly and revive communities abandoned through years of neglect,” he said.

Adebayo also advocated greater decentralisation and empowerment of sub‑national governments, saying regional authorities were better positioned to understand and address local challenges.

“We will give regional governments real power and resources to address the issues affecting their people because they understand their communities far better than Abuja,” he added.

On the economy, the SDP flag bearer promised to pursue large‑scale foreign direct investment, particularly in sectors capable of driving long‑term economic growth.

He said Nigeria possessed the population, resources and youthful energy needed to emerge as a global economic power if properly managed.

“We have the youth, the natural resources, the spirit and the drive to become one of the world’s leading economies. We must also leverage emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence to drive growth,” he said.

Adebayo maintained that restoring confidence in governance would attract investors and unlock Nigeria’s economic potential.

“Investment follows trust. Once corruption is tackled and governance becomes credible, Nigeria will begin to attract the opportunities it deserves,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the SDP could once again emerge victorious at the national level, recalling the party’s historical role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

“The SDP has won before and it can win again. The work begins now,” he declared.
