Several members of a group of repentant Boko Haram terrorists who are reportedly cooperating with the military—including the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and regular soldiers—were killed when armed Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters attacked a military base in Mandaragirau Village, Biu local government area, Borno State, according to sources.
The attack, which occurred at about 4 a.m. on Friday during heavy rain, also left dozens of insurgents dead and wounded.
Mandaragirau, located on the Biu‑Damboa‑Maiduguri road that was closed to motorists several years ago because of safety concerns, has experienced deadly attacks in the recent past.
A Biu resident, Mallam Usman Yahaya, told our correspondent that he saw several military ambulances transporting the dead and injured to Biu town for medical care.
Another source said, “at least 20 people—mostly repentant terrorists and CJTF members—were killed, and no fewer than eight soldiers also paid the supreme price.”
Attempts to obtain confirmation from Police Public Relations Officer ASP Kenneth Daso were unsuccessful at the time of writing.
